Catalan painter and sculptor (1923-2012), Antoni Tàpies is considered one of the most important of the 20th century.
At the same time he was studying Law, Tàpies dedicated part of his time to painting and to collages, of existentialist and surrealist content, influenced by philosophers like Jean-Paul Sartre and Martin Heidegger. In 1945 he ends up abandoning school, settling in a studio in Barcelona. The following years are of contact with different artists and intellectuals, and of increasing recognition. In the 50’s he abandons Surrealism, approaching to the European informalism. In 1990, the Antoni Tàpies Foundation is inaugurated, an institution founded by Antoni Tàpies himself to promote the contemporary art.
